ANCHORAGE, AK – Due to the lack of leadership from Senator Dan Sullivan and Representative Nick Begich, Alaskans will face a lapse in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) ahead of the holiday season.
Because of the government shutdown, the federal government informed states that funding for SNAP will not be given after November 1, 2025. That means nearly 70,000 Alaskans will face an even bigger hurdle to putting food on the table for their families, impacting nearly ten percent of Alaska’s population who depend on this food assistance. One in seven adults in Alaska, and one in five children, already experience food insecurity with help from SNAP – the lapse in this crucial funding will only further exacerbate Alaska’s alarming rates of food insecurity ahead of the holidays.
“Dan Sullivan and Nick Begich have repeatedly decided to prioritize lining their own pockets and giving handouts to their billionaire buddies over the needs of Alaska families, and this time is no different,” said Alaska Democratic Party Executive Director Jenny-Marie Stryker. “Tens of thousands of Alaskans who are already experiencing food insecurity are going to be struggling even more to put food on the table for their families. It’s heartbreaking, and we can’t afford to wait for Sullivan and Begich to do the right thing. We must come together as a community to support one another. That’s why we decided to hold a food drive at the Alaska Democratic Party office in Anchorage, to do whatever we can to help Alaska families during these times of uncertainty.”
The Alaska Democratic Party will be holding a food drive to collect non-perishable food donations for the Food Bank of Alaska through November 17th, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM. Donations will be collected at the Alaska Democratic Party Anchorage office at 1500 West 33rd Ave, Suite 210, Anchorage, AK 99503.
