Rep. Dibert is Koyukon Athabascan and was born and raised in Fairbanks. Her native name is Neelthdinlo, which means “a strong runner.” Rep. Dibert was a teacher at Denali Elementary School for over 20 years before being elected to represent House District 31 in 2022. 

Rep. Dibert was in a perfect position to see what could and should be done in Alaska. Growing up in Fairbanks gave her an intimate knowledge of the area and the problems in it, and her work as a teacher gave her insight into an all-too common problem: hunger. 

Over 60,000 Alaskans rely on food assistance, and hunger rates are increasing. Most concerning of all, one in six children in Alaska is hungry – an issue that hurts their school performance. While many teachers and community programs try to fill the gap, Rep. Dibert knew that more was needed.

That’s why Rep. Dibert introduced HB 12, a bill to provide free breakfast and lunch to every student in Alaska’s public schools. By increasing funding for school meal programs, the bill ensures hungry kids can focus in class, improves attendance and learning, and takes some of the financial strain off families across the state.

HB 12 is still moving through the legislative process, but it remains on track. If passed, it would be a huge step toward improving outcomes for children and strengthening the future of our state.
