Sullivan and Begich Put Lives of Alaskans at Risk with Vote to Rescind Federal Funding for Public Media

A few hours after a tsunami warning in southwestern Alaska, Senator Dan Sullivan decided to cut tens of millions of dollars from Alaska’s 27 public radio stations.

ANCHORAGE, AK – The Alaska Democratic Party is calling out Senator Dan Sullivan and Representative Nick Begich for voting to gut tens of millions of dollars meant to fund Alaska’s 27 public radio stations. The loss of this federal funding could mean massive impacts to the station’s operations, including life-saving emergency broadcasts. This is particularly important in Alaska’s most rural and remote communities, where broadband and cellular technology are unreliable. Whether it’s a typhoon, earthquake, or tsunami, public media is a lifeline for Alaskans across the state.

Sullivan’s vote to rescind this crucial funding came hours after a tsunami warning was broadcasted in southwestern Alaska by the same public radio stations he voted to gut funding from. Begich also voted in favor of the bill in June, demonstrating his lack of understanding of the Alaska way of life.

“Despite a real-time example of why this funding is so crucial, Sullivan doubled down on his decision to gut this lifeline for Alaskans and follow Trump’s orders once again,” Alaska Democratic Party Executive Director Jenny-Marie Stryker said. “It’s clear Sullivan isn’t representing Alaskans in Congress – he’s nothing more than a puppet for his Republican bosses’ agenda.”

Mary Peltola Says It Plainly

Former Congresswoman Mary Peltola offered a clear rebuke on social media:

“While thanking God last night when the tsunami threat passed, I couldn’t help but think this is exactly why rural emergency alert funding shouldn’t be rescinded. Lives are on the line. This is more than politics.”

This bill doesn’t represent Alaska values – it represents a clear disregard for the lives of Alaskans.

“Begich and Sullivan were elected to represent the best interests of Alaskans, but time and time again, they prove they are only interested in their own financial interests,” said Alaska Democratic Party Chair Eric Croft. “Gutting healthcare, access to food assistance, and funding for life-saving emergency alerts to pay for a tax break for themselves and other millionaires and billionaires is a direct attack on Alaskans. And we won’t forget the damage they’re doing when they’re up for re-election.”
