Presiding Officer of the FNSB Assembly, Mindy O’Neall, flips Fairbanks city mayoral seat after being held by a Republican for nearly a decade
FAIRBANKS, AK – Last night, Fairbanks City Mayor David Pruhs was unseated by Presiding Officer of the FNSB Assembly Mindy O’Neall in the election for Fairbanks City Mayor. Pruhs conceded late last night and attested O’Neall’s victory to the efforts of the Alaska Democratic Party and local Democratic efforts.
“[O’Neall] had a very engaged Democratic Party statewide and local parties to help her,” Pruhs said in an interview with the Alaska News Source. “When you have an entire state Democratic Party focused on one race, it’s hard to rebuff that.”
“While we appreciate Pruhs’ kind words about the Alaska Democratic Party, this win would not have been possible without the tireless effort that Mindy O’Neall and her campaign put in to win this election,” Alaska Democratic Party Executive Director Jenny-Marie Stryker said. “It takes teamwork and lots of hard work to win. We’re so excited to see the difference that Mayor-Elect O’Neall will make in the city of Fairbanks, and we look forward to continuing to support local candidates. This win is a direct reflection of the work we’re doing at the Alaska Democratic Party, the work of Mindy’s team, and the change that is possible across Alaska when we come together.”
O’Neall has a long history of dedication to the Fairbanks community, working with builders, realtors, military leaders, nonprofits, public agencies, and private industry to create a downtown housing plan that streamlines affordable, energy-efficient development. She also worked as a business agent and organizer for a local union and will be stepping into the role of City Mayor following her service on the Borough Assembly.
“I am deeply grateful to everyone who believed in this campaign and gave their time, heart, and energy to make this win possible,” Fairbanks City Mayor-Elect Mindy O’Neall said. “My campaign was about building a Fairbanks that works for everyone. This win proves that folks in Fairbanks still believe in listening, planning, and working together to build a vibrant and resilient community where our kids, seniors, and everyone in between can thrive. Our campaign was built on collaboration and compassion, and that is exactly how I’ll lead.”
O’Neall also expressed her enthusiasm to partner with local Native organizations that play a vital role in the community, emphasizing her commitment to collaboration and mutual respect. She extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who engaged with and uplifted the campaign’s message of respect for all members of the Fairbanks community.
