Tom Begich and Julia Hnilicka ran a powerhouse campaign and formed a historic team. They organized across Alaska and earned the support of tens of thousands of voters. Alaska Democrats are enormously proud of the operation they built and the vision they offered for our state.

In a sprawling 17-ticket field, Democratic candidates finished first and second, proving that our voters are energized, our campaigns are disciplined, and the movement is firmly behind us. Tom and Julia decided to withdraw in order to give Democrats the best chance for success in this critical Governor’s race. In their announcement, Tom stated, “The data we have seen makes clear that the strongest path to winning in November is not two Democratic candidates competing for the same donors and resources, it’s bringing those people together behind one ticket.” Julia stated, “Our campaign may be ending, but the work is not,” Hnilicka said. “And neither is our belief in what Alaska can become.” 

“I am lucky to have known and worked with Tom Begich for decades, and I was thrilled when he announced his candidacy. He and Julia ran their campaign and made this decision in the way I know them to be: absolutely dedicated to our great state,” said Eric Croft. “As I have said many times, Tom deserves much of the credit for the bipartisan majority caucuses we have in Alaska. Being in the minority is frustrating, but Tom saw a purpose beyond just stopping bad legislation. He saw what others could not; a future of cooperation and accomplishment past division. He formed relationships across the aisle that brought that vision to reality.”

Winning the governor’s office for the first time in more than two decades will require hard decisions and a strong coalition. We are united behind Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and ready to restore common sense, competence, and integrity to the Governor’s Office.

Alaska Democrats are in lockstep. And we intend to win.
