Alaska Democrats Finalize Statewide Candidate Endorsements

The Alaska Democratic Party has endorsed Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins (JKT) for Governor, independent candidate Zac Johnson for Lieutenant Governor, and independent candidate Bill Hill for U.S. House following votes of the Party’s State Central Committee Tuesday night.

Following Tom Begich and Julia Hnilicka’s decision to end their campaign, JKT is the only Democratic Gubernatorial candidate remaining in the race. He has proven his ability to win difficult races, partner with independent thinkers, and put partisanship aside to deliver for Alaskans. Zac Johnson, a Marine Corps veteran and independent Anchorage Assembly member, reflects the ticket’s commitment to cross-partisan, Alaska-first leadership. Alaska Democrats are well positioned to win the governor’s office, and the Party is thrilled to put its full support behind the Kreiss-Tomkins/Johnson ticket.

In the race for Alaska’s sole U.S. House seat, the State Central Committee voted to endorse independent candidate Bill Hill. The only Democrat remaining in the race, Eric Hafner, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in New York and has no apparent ties to Alaska. He does not and will not have the support of the Alaska Democratic Party. Bill Hill is Dena’ina Athabascan, a lifelong Alaskan, former school superintendent, and fisherman. Following commitments from Hill on organized labor, reproductive freedom, and reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the State Central Committee voted to endorse his campaign for Alaska’s only seat in the U.S. House.

“Alaska Democrats are known for putting forward candidates who think like Alaska, move like Alaska, and talk like Alaska,” said Eric Croft, Chairman of the Alaska Democratic Party. “Our endorsements for JKT, Zac, and Bill demonstrate that Democrats are building the broad majority it takes to win in Alaska. We bridge partisan lines, bring people into our movement, and win in the toughest of districts. That’s a lesson the rest of the country could learn from.”
