Anchorage Daily News: “In Alaska, between 9,400 and 13,600 recipients are projected to lose access to Medicaid”
A new report commissioned by the Alaska Department of Health shows that up to 13,600 Alaskans could lose access to Medicaid after Dan Sullivan cast the deciding vote for the GOP bill that slashed Medicaid funding, despite the fact that Alaskans rely on Medicaid to provide life-saving care.
Just last week, Sullivan falsely claimed that “The bill does not touch Medicaid for Alaska.” When defending the bill, Sullivan said, “I think it is safe to say, no state fared better from this bill.”
“Dan Sullivan lying to Alaskans and looking out for himself is nothing new – but people shouldn’t have to pay the price for his selfishness with their lives,” said Alaska Democratic Party Eric Croft, “Medicaid is a lifeline for Alaska communities, and this data proves that his abhorrent bill will have devastating effects on folks who need health care the most. Sullivan needs to be held accountable for his betrayal of Alaskans, and this fall we’ll send him packing.”
More than 200,000 Alaskans rely on Medicaid to receive life-saving health care, and Alaska has one of the highest rates of uninsured citizens in the United States. As the deciding vote for the legislation, Sullivan authorized a projected $2 billion in cuts to Medicaid for Alaska and ended the ACA premium subsidies that 24,000 Alaskans relied on to afford their health insurance. As a result, it is estimated that Alaskans’ health insurance costs are going up by up to $1,836 per year on average.
In addition to gutting Alaskans’ health care through his “One Big Beautiful Bill,” Sullivan also voted seven times in less than two months against extending ACA tax credits that would lower Alaskans’ health care costs: September 30th, October 1st, October 3rd, October 6th, October 8th, October 9th, and November 10th.
