As the anniversary of the 2015 Iran Nuclear Agreement passes, and as gas prices rise again – causing a statewide struggle for Alaska families and businesses – Alaskans deserve to know if Dan Sullivan thinks the price-hiking war he has voted for 10 times was worth it.
“The Sullivan-backed war has caused gas and oil prices to skyrocket, and Alaskans can’t afford another forever war,” said Alaska Democratic Party Chair Eric Croft. “Sullivan’s policies are costing Alaskans every day from gas to groceries to health care, and we deserve an answer from Sullivan on whether or not he thinks his price-hiking war is worth it.”
Sullivan’s price-hikes have caused long-term pain for Alaskans of all stripes, raising prices on air travel, groceries, and small businesses – but especially rural Alaskans who rely on fuel delivered by barge, which was priced when tankers were filled in May. Since some villages only get one or two fuel deliveries a year, rural communities “had no choice this year but to place their orders in the spring, just as the Iran war sent prices soaring.”
Alaska leaders have warned of an “energy crisis of extraordinary and unprecedented scale” in rural Alaska — a “life and death” situation driven by Dan Sullivan’s support for the war that has led to record high fuel prices, with some parts of the state paying a third more per gallon of gas than they were last summer. Dan Sullivan has written off the impacts of his affordability crisis as “externalities”, and has even sent a shameless fundraising email asking his own constituents for gas money.
