Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured enough votes to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for the office of President of the United States after an overwhelming majority of Democratic delegates across the country submitted their virtual ballots. Alaska’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention endorsed Vice President Harris on July 21, 2024, and began to cast their virtual votes yesterday.
The delegates are taking a virtual vote to ensure the Democratic presidential nominee meets general election ballot access deadlines in all 50 states. Virtual voting will close on Monday, August 5, 2024. Harris is expected to accept the nomination and select a running mate next week. The in-person convention will take place in Chicago, Illinois, from August 19-22, 2024.
“We are thrilled that Vice President Harris has secured the Party’s nomination,” said Chair Mike Wenstrup. “She has demonstrated over and over that she is capable of winning in November and leading our nation.”
“In the short time since Vice President Harris officially announced and declared her intent to run, we’ve witnessed and been part of a monumental moment in our nation’s history,” said Anchorage Vice Chair and Alaska Democratic Delegate Rozlyn Grady-Wyche. “We will come together in Chicago fully united behind the nominee to celebrate and support her path to victory.”
“Unity in Alaska and our nation is more important now than it ever has been,” said Alaska’s Democratic National Committeeman Chuck Degnan of Unalakleet. “It has been incredible to witness the enthusiasm and support Vice President Kamala Harris has received since her announcement, and I am beyond proud to stand by her.”
Grassroots enthusiasm and excitement for the presumptive nominee in Alaska continue to build. Vice President Harris is also endorsed by the Tongass Democrats, Interior Democrats, and the Gulf Coast Democrats. The Anchorage Democrats passed a resolution in full support of her candidacy shortly after President Biden announced he would no longer seek reelection.
