Alaska’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention has thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign on Sunday. A motion to endorse Vice President Harris to be the Democratic nominee for president was adopted by the delegates, standing committee members, and pages that were present and voting at a meeting of the entire delegation on Sunday evening.

“Vice President Harris has a proven record of delivering for America’s working families and protecting our fundamental freedoms. She has demonstrated her ability to lead our country with strength, compassion, and dignity as Attorney General, Senator, and Vice President,” said Alaska State Senator Elvi Gray-Jackson, one of Alaska’s at-large pledged delegates selected at the Alaska Democratic Party State Convention. “I am proud to stand by her as the Democratic nominee for president.”

“Vice President Harris will carry on the legacy of President Biden with unprecedented investments in Alaska and our people,” said Chair Mike Wenstrup. “She is well-poised to earn the nomination and to win in November.”

“President Biden won an overwhelming majority of delegates across the nation in the primaries, including in Alaska,” said Vice Chair Jessica Cook. “As part of that ticket, Vice President Harris has my unwavering support.”

Vice President Harris has the support of President Joe Biden and Democrat leaders around the country including U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

Delegates to the Democratic National Convention will vote to determine the presidential nominee in August. Alaska has twenty voting delegates, two alternate delegates, three standing committee members, three pages, and one non-voting delegation member.
